Why Halal Protein?

How halal whey protein is manufactured

Halal whey protein is the highest quality protein there is in the market. Each step of the process makes it the most desired protein. The halal process brings the already high standard of the protein to the next level. In order to follow the halal standard, many substances cannot be used in the manufacturing process which means you get the product that is fee from all the ingredients you don’t need. Lets look at the step-by step process of how halal whey protein is manufactured.

  1. Cow’s milk

The source of whey protein is milk, so the process starts with obtaining milk from cows. Best milk comes from grass-fed cows in open farms without the use of any antibiotics and growth hormones. Such milk is the highest quality milk in the market free from all antibiotics and hormones.

Milk in its natural form contains two type of protein including casein and whey. The ratio of casein in milk is 80% whereas there is 20% whey naturally present in milk. Milk contains about 5% lactose, 4% fat and 3.5% protein in its natural form. This milk is then transported to the factory in large refrigerated tanks.

  1. Pasteurization

Fresh milk contains bacteria that may not be good for human consumption. So as a next step, milk is heated to get rid of any unwanted bacteria. This rise in temperature split the milk into curds and liquid whey. After separation the curds are strained and we are left with liquid halal whey. In this natural state the halal whey is a mixture of mostly water with a bit of protein, fat, carbohydrates and lactose. This halal whey then goes through different steps of filtration and drying process to be turned into halal whey protein powder.

  1. Milk separation

Enzymes are added to the milk to alter the casein micelle structure and make the milk curdle. A commonly used enzyme is a component of rennet known as chymosin. This enzyme is normally obtained from calf stomach, fungi or yeast. In order to make the protein halal, we must ensure that the enzymes added in milk separation process is halal. These enzymes turn the milk into curds. This solid part of milk forms the base for a long list of different cheese and other related products. The remaining part is the halal liquid whey.

  1. Micro-filtration

Once the halal liquid whey is obtained, it is sent to the plant to be filtered to high-protein liquid whey. During this step, halal liquid whey goes through further purification to remove fats, carbohydrates and water. In order to ensure the process meets the halal requirements, the manufacturing plant has to be halal complaint and certified. In a halal certified protein manufacturing plant, liquid whey is filtered through an array of ceramic micro-filters. This process happens in a cold environment and is completely natural. This process removes most fat and lactose from the liquid whey which results in the base product of whey protein concentrate.

  1. Spray drying

Spray drying is a process where liquid whey protein is dried by removing the water and moisture. This process is done by putting the halal high-protein whey liquid into a dryer. Hot and cold air is introduced into the dryer which rapidly removes water. The correct spray drying process also ensures that halal whey does not lose its nutritional form and the halal protein does not get denatured when the residual moisture has evaporated. With the evaporation of water, we are left with high quality halal whey protein powder.

  1. Quality control

The most important step in the process is to check the quality of the product to ensure it meets the high standards. While quality is ensured at every step in the process, the final produce is tested to strictly measure the amount of protein in the powder. In order to pass the quality control, the final product must have 80% to 90% protein. If the protein level falls below this threshold, it is discarded.

  1. Blending

The high-quality whey protein powder does not have any flavor of its own. In order to make flavored whey protein blend, high-quality whey protein powder is sent to other facilities for blending. Blending is a process where other ingredients such as flavors, colors, and sweeteners are added to the mixture. In order to ensure the blend is of high quality, it is processed in a halal certified blending facility where only premium ingredients are used to make the flavored protein.

  1. Packaging

Finally, the flavored halal protein is packaged into a high-quality packaging to ensure the powder can maintain its high quality until its consumed. To ensures the product is of high quality, a sample of every batch is sent to the lab for testing. This process ensures that every package contains the best protein enriched with best flavors.
